Exfoliating Wipes

We manufacture private label exfoliating wipes in both routes — chemical, with glycolic or lactic acid at a controlled pH, and physical, with a textured dual-sided substrate. Made in the USA for skincare brands, dermatology-adjacent lines and men’s grooming programmes.

How it works

Two completely different mechanisms in one product category

Chemical exfoliation works by dissolving the bonds that hold dead cells to the skin surface. Alpha-hydroxy acids — glycolic, the smallest and most penetrating, or lactic, larger and gentler with a humectant bonus — weaken the desmosomal junctions in the outer stratum corneum so the cells shed evenly. The critical variable is not concentration but pH: an AHA only works in its free-acid form, which requires a formulation pH around 3.5–4.0. A 10% glycolic wipe buffered to pH 5 does almost nothing, which is why concentration alone on a label tells a buyer very little.

Physical exfoliation works mechanically. Instead of acid, a textured substrate — usually a dual-sided construction with a smooth cleansing face and an embossed or raised-pattern abrasive face — lifts dead cells and debris directly. It is more forgiving of user error, needs no pH control, works instantly, and suits body use, ingrown-hair prevention and men’s pre-shave preparation. It is also the safer route for a brand without a regulatory or claims function.

We produce both, and increasingly a hybrid: a mild lactic acid at 3–5% on a lightly textured substrate, which gives visible smoothing without the sting-and-peel cycle that makes customers abandon a stronger product after two uses. Every exfoliating formulation carries sun-sensitivity guidance and a frequency recommendation on pack — with AHAs, telling customers to use it less is what keeps them using it at all.

At a glance

✓Glycolic (3–8%) or lactic acid at pH 3.5–4.0

✓Physical route: dual-sided textured substrate

✓Hybrid mild-acid-plus-texture option

✓Sun-sensitivity and frequency guidance printed on pack

✓Face and body sizes from the same formulation

pH is the whole game with AHAs. Free-acid availability, not label percentage, determines whether the product works.

Applications

Where exfoliating wipes sell

A smaller category than facial or makeup remover wipes, but a higher price point and a more engaged customer.

01

Resurfacing skincare lines

Positioned as the weekly or twice-weekly step alongside a daily cleanser — the single-use wipe format removes the dosing guesswork that puts people off bottled acid toners.

02

Men’s pre-shave & grooming

Textured exfoliating wipes lift the beard hair and clear dead cells before shaving, reducing ingrown hairs. A clear, easily explained benefit in a receptive market.

03

Keratosis & body smoothing

Larger textured or lactic acid wipes for upper arms, thighs and backs — body exfoliation is under-served relative to facial.

04

Ingrown hair & bikini care

Glycolic wipes as an aftercare step following waxing or shaving, frequently sold alongside hair-removal products rather than skincare.

05

Spa & professional retail

Take-home maintenance products retailed after in-clinic treatments, where the practitioner’s recommendation drives the sale.

06

Travel & trial formats

Individually wrapped single sachets — the natural sampling format for an active product a customer wants to try before committing.

AHA products need HRIPT patch testing before a sensitive-skin or dermatologist-tested claim is made. Skipping it is the most common compliance gap we see in this category.

Comparison

Exfoliating, facial or makeup remover?

Exfoliating wipes are the weekly step, not the daily one. Positioning them as a cleanser replacement causes irritation complaints.

Pick the route that matches your claims capability

If you have a regulatory and claims function, a pH-controlled glycolic wipe is a strong, differentiated product. If you do not, a textured physical wipe delivers a visible, immediate benefit with far less claims exposure and no pH stability work. We build both, and we will tell you honestly which fits your organisation.

✓Chemical, physical or hybrid route

✓AHA type and percentage at validated formulation pH

✓Dual-sided textured substrate tooling

FAQ

Exfoliating wipes FAQ

What is the difference between chemical and physical exfoliating wipes?

Chemical wipes use an acid — usually glycolic or lactic — to dissolve the bonds holding dead cells to the surface. Physical wipes use a textured substrate to lift them mechanically. Chemical gives a more even result and can address pigmentation and texture over time; physical is instant, more forgiving and carries far less claims and irritation risk.

Does a higher acid percentage mean a stronger exfoliating wipe?

Not on its own. An alpha-hydroxy acid only works in its free-acid form, and that depends on formulation pH — around 3.5 to 4.0. An 8% glycolic wipe buffered to pH 5 will underperform a 4% wipe at pH 3.7. When comparing suppliers, ask for the formulation pH, not just the percentage.

How often should exfoliating wipes be used?

Once or twice a week for most people, and that guidance should be printed on the pack. Over-exfoliation is the number one cause of negative reviews in this category — customers assume more is better, damage their barrier, and blame the product. Telling them to use it less genuinely improves retention.

Do exfoliating wipes cause sun sensitivity?

AHA-based ones do. Removing the outer stratum corneum reduces the skin’s natural UV protection, so daytime SPF guidance is required on pack and should be prominent, not buried. Physical exfoliating wipes carry much less of this concern, which is one reason brands without a regulatory function often choose that route.

Can exfoliating wipes be used on the body?

Yes, and body is arguably the under-served opportunity. Larger textured or lactic acid wipes work well for keratosis pilaris on upper arms, rough skin on thighs and elbows, and as post-shave or post-wax aftercare for ingrown hairs. We produce an 8″ × 10″ body size from the same formulations.

Are exfoliating wipes suitable for sensitive skin?

A mild lactic acid or PHA formulation, or a lightly textured physical wipe, can be. Glycolic at the upper end of the range generally is not. If a sensitive-skin claim is intended, HRIPT patch testing should be completed first — we coordinate that as part of development rather than leaving it to the brand afterwards.
