How it works

Where the plastic in a wet wipe actually is

Most conventional wet wipes are not paper. They are nonwoven fabric, and a large share of that fabric is polyester or polypropylene — plastic. That is what makes a wipe strong when wet, and it is also why wipes persist in the environment, form the backbone of sewer fatbergs, and shed microplastics as they break apart. Replacing that fibre is the whole substance of a biodegradable wipe; a plant-derived liquid on a polyester substrate is greenwashing, and increasingly recognised as such.

Our biodegradable substrates are 100% plant-based — viscose, lyocell, bamboo, cotton or blends — and contain no plastic fibre at all. The engineering challenge is wet strength: it is exactly the property polyester was added to provide. Plant fibres deliver it through hydro-entanglement density and fibre selection rather than through synthetic content, so the specification has to be tuned deliberately or you get a wipe that tears in use, which no amount of environmental virtue will excuse to a parent mid-change.

Two claims to be careful with. Biodegradable and compostable are not synonyms: compostable is the stricter, testable claim, verified against standards such as EN 13432 or certification schemes like OK Compost, and it specifies the conditions and timeframe. And flushable is a separate matter again — passing dispersibility testing is not the same as being welcome in a municipal wastewater system, and water utilities are actively litigating and legislating on this. Our advice, consistently, is to claim compostable with the certificate and to keep flushability claims narrow and qualified.

A compostable wipe in a conventional plastic pack is the criticism this category attracts most often, and it is a fair one. If sustainability is your positioning, price the plastic-free outer into the plan from the beginning rather than treating it as phase two.

Are normal baby wipes plastic?

Largely, yes — and most people are surprised by it. Conventional wipes are nonwoven fabric with a significant polyester or polypropylene content, which is what gives them wet strength. That plastic fibre is why wipes persist in the environment, contribute to sewer blockages and shed microplastics as they degrade. Removing it is what a biodegradable wipe actually does.

What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable wipes?

Biodegradable means it will break down eventually, with no defined conditions or timeframe — which makes it a weak claim. Compostable is testable: it means breaking down within a specified period under specified conditions, verified against a standard such as EN 13432 or a scheme like OK Compost. If you can support compostable, claim that instead.

Can biodegradable baby wipes be flushed?

We would advise against claiming so without heavy qualification. A dispersible substrate can pass industry flushability testing, but that is not the same as being acceptable to a municipal wastewater system, and water utilities are actively pursuing brands over this. We supply dispersible grades where a customer needs them and help write claim language that is narrow and defensible.

Are plant-based wipes as strong as regular ones?

They can be, but it takes deliberate engineering. Wet strength is precisely the property polyester was added to provide, so a plant-fibre wipe has to achieve it through fibre selection and hydro-entanglement density instead. Done carelessly, you get a wipe that tears mid-change — and no environmental claim survives that experience with a parent.

Does the packaging need to be plastic-free too?

If sustainability is your positioning, effectively yes. A certified compostable wipe in a conventional plastic pack is the most common and most justified criticism in this category. A paper-based outer changes the moisture barrier and therefore shelf life, so it needs designing in from the start — but it should be in the plan, not deferred.

Which environmental claim is safest to make?

A specific, certified one. “Compostable, certified to EN 13432” with a plant-fibre composition disclosed is defensible. “Eco-friendly”, “natural” and unqualified “biodegradable” are the claims drawing regulatory and press attention.
