How it works

The first four weeks are a different skin problem

A newborn is not simply a small baby, dermatologically. At birth the skin is still transitioning from the vernix-coated aquatic environment to air: the acid mantle has not yet established — surface pH starts near neutral and takes weeks to drop into the protective acidic range — the stratum corneum is thinner still, transepidermal water loss is higher, and the barrier is at its most permeable. Anything applied in this window has the greatest access and the least resistance.

So the newborn formulation is our most restrictive. It is water-led with the shortest deck we produce: no fragrance, no alcohol, no essential oils, no dyes, no unnecessary botanicals — because a botanical is an ingredient like any other and novelty is not a virtue here. A trace of glycerin supports hydration while the barrier matures, and the pH is left gently acidic to help the acid mantle establish rather than working against it.

The umbilical stump is the specific reason this SKU exists separately. For the first one to three weeks the cord stump is a healing wound, and standard guidance is to keep it clean and dry and to avoid fragranced or alcohol-containing products near it. A wipe designed for that period says so on the pack, and a nervous first-time parent at 3am is precisely the customer who values being told. Physically, we run the highest-loft, softest substrate in our range: a newborn nappy change happens ten to twelve times a day, and cumulative friction across dozens of changes a week is the thing that actually causes damage.

Why do newborns need a different wipe?

Because newborn skin is still adapting to air. The acid mantle has not yet formed — surface pH starts near neutral and takes weeks to become protective — the stratum corneum is thinner than an older baby’s, water loss is higher, and the barrier is at its most permeable. Combine that with ten to twelve changes a day and both the formulation and the substrate need to be gentler than a standard baby wipe.

Can newborn wipes be used around the umbilical cord stump?

Ours are formulated to be suitable near it — no fragrance, no alcohol, no essential oils. Standard guidance is to keep the stump clean and dry and to avoid fragranced or alcohol-based products around it while it heals, typically one to three weeks. Pack copy should point parents to their clinician’s guidance rather than substituting for it.

What is the difference between newborn wipes and water wipes?

They overlap heavily. Water wipes are defined by the 99% water claim; newborn wipes are defined by the use period — a minimal water-led deck, a gently acidic pH chosen to help the acid mantle establish, a noticeably higher-loft substrate for very frequent changes, and explicit umbilical stump guidance. Many ranges carry both, with newborn positioned as the first-four-weeks product.

Are wipes safe for a newborn at all, or should I use cotton wool and water?

Both are used widely, and clinical opinion has moved considerably — a minimal-deck, fragrance-free, pH-appropriate wipe performs comparably to cotton wool and water in studies, and is far more practical at 3am. What matters is the formulation being genuinely minimal, which is the point of a dedicated newborn SKU rather than a general-purpose wipe.

Why is the substrate heavier on a newborn wipe?

Because friction is cumulative. At ten to twelve changes a day, a thin wipe that forces the carer to press and drag causes more damage over a week than any single ingredient would. We run the highest loft and softest emboss in our range on this SKU, and it is what parents notice first when comparing brands.

Do you supply newborn wipes for hospital discharge bags?

Yes, in plain or co-branded 20-wipe packs. It is one of the most valuable placements in the category — the product is used at the moment of highest trust and habit formation — and we would generally advise pricing it aggressively to secure the placement.
