How it works

How to clean wood furniture without stripping the finish

Almost all furniture sold today is sealed — the wood carries a lacquer, polyurethane or catalysed varnish film, and that film is what you are cleaning. The wood underneath is not exposed and cannot be fed, which makes most of the folklore in this category describe a material that is not present. What actually degrades over time is the finish: UV light yellows and embrittles it, heat and moisture cloud it, and repeated silicone polish builds a layer that has to be stripped before the piece can ever be refinished.

Silicone is the specific problem worth naming. It produces an instant deep gloss, which is why the category is full of it, and it never fully cures — so it attracts dust, transfers to anything set on the surface, and creates fisheye contamination that makes a future refinish fail unless the piece is chemically stripped first. Furniture restorers will not use silicone polish on anything they may see again. Our formulation is a water-based emulsion with a mild non-ionic surfactant and a benzotriazole-class UV absorber, and no silicone at all.

The practical boundaries, which is what the pack should say: fine on sealed and lacquered wood, veneer, laminate and most painted furniture. Not for oiled or waxed pieces, which are maintained with more of their own oil or wax and are stripped by a surfactant. Not for unsealed or bare wood, which absorbs water and raises grain. And on mould — a query that comes up 1,300 times a month — the honest answer is that surface mould on a sealed finish wipes off, mould that has penetrated the finish into the wood is a restoration job, and neither is fixed with bleach on furniture.

How do you clean wood furniture properly?

Dust dry first, because dragging grit across a lacquer film is what puts fine scratches into it. Then work one surface at a time with a barely damp, pH-neutral product, going with the grain, and buff dry immediately — standing moisture is what clouds a finish. Do not oil sealed furniture; the finish prevents absorption, so the oil simply sits on top and collects dust.

Why is silicone bad in furniture polish?

Three reasons, in increasing order of seriousness. It never fully cures, so it stays tacky and attracts dust. It transfers to anything set down on the surface. And it causes fisheye contamination that makes a future refinish fail unless the piece is chemically stripped first — which is why restorers refuse to let silicone polish near anything they may see again. The instant gloss is real; so is the long-term cost.

Can these wipes be used on oiled or waxed furniture?

No. An oiled or waxed piece is maintained by adding more of the same oil or wax, and a surfactant strips it — leaving the wood looking patchy and thirsty. If you can feel a slightly soft, matte surface that darkens when you press a damp finger to it, it is probably oiled. Sealed and lacquered furniture feels like a hard film and is what this product is for.

How do you clean mould off wood furniture?

If the mould is sitting on a sealed finish, wipe it off with a mild cleaner, dry the piece thoroughly and fix the humidity that caused it — mould on furniture is always a moisture problem first. If it has penetrated through the finish into the wood, no wipe will reach it and the piece needs stripping and refinishing. Bleach is a common suggestion and a poor one on furniture: it damages the finish, raises the grain and does not reach hyphae below the surface.

Do furniture wipes really protect against sun damage?

They slow it, which is the honest claim. UV absorbers in the film reduce the dose reaching the finish, so yellowing and embrittlement happen more slowly. They cannot reverse damage already done, and no product can — a finish that has gone amber has changed chemically. Regular use from new is worth much more than heavy use later, and moving the piece out of direct sun is worth more than either.

Can I use these on kitchen cabinets?

Yes, and that is where a lot of the volume actually goes — cabinet fronts are lacquered wood or laminate and are cleaned far more often than freestanding furniture. For the worktop surfaces between them use our kitchen wipes; a furniture emulsion on a counter leaves a film you will have to remove before preparing food on it.
