How it works
Why 70% — and not 99%
Alcohol kills by denaturing protein and dissolving the lipid membrane that holds a microbial cell together. Both of those reactions need water to happen. At 99% concentration there is almost no water present, so the alcohol dehydrates the cell surface and stalls — the outer proteins coagulate into a shell that protects everything inside. At 60–70% the water carries alcohol through the membrane and denaturation runs to completion. This is why every clinical prep pad on the market is 70%, and why a “stronger” wipe is a weaker wipe.
Our standard formulation is 70% v/v USP-grade isopropyl alcohol on a soft nonwoven pad, sealed in a foil-laminate sachet that stops the alcohol evaporating in storage — the single biggest failure mode in cheap prep pads. Contact time is short: the pad is effective against bacteria, fungi and enveloped viruses within roughly 10–15 seconds, which in practice means let it air-dry, don’t blot it. Alcohol is not sporicidal, so it is the wrong choice for Clostridioides difficile — for that you want our bleach wipes.
Ethanol-based and dual-active (alcohol + chlorhexidine) formulations are available, as are sterile pads for procedures where the prep itself has to be sterile rather than merely antiseptic.

Alcohol wipes FAQ
Why are medical alcohol wipes 70% and not stronger?
Because alcohol needs water to kill effectively. Denaturing a protein and dissolving a lipid membrane are both hydrolytic reactions — at 99% there is not enough water present, so the cell surface simply dehydrates and forms a protective coagulated layer. At 60–70% the alcohol penetrates and the kill completes. Higher concentration evaporates faster and disinfects less.
Do alcohol wipes kill C. difficile or norovirus?
No. Alcohol has no meaningful activity against bacterial spores such as C. difficile, and it is unreliable against non-enveloped viruses like norovirus. For those you need an oxidising chemistry — our bleach wipes or hydrogen peroxide wipes. We will tell you this before you order rather than after.
Can you make sterile alcohol prep pads?
Yes. We produce gamma-irradiated sterile pads to a sterility assurance level of 10⁻⁶, individually sealed, for procedures where the prep itself must be sterile — central line dressings, implant sites and compounding work. Sterile and non-sterile share the same artwork and sachet tooling.
What is the difference between an alcohol wipe and an alcohol prep pad?
Commercially, very little — “prep pad” usually means the small folded 1″ × 2″ format used for injection sites, while “wipe” tends to mean anything larger. We make both from the same formulation, and the search terms are worth targeting separately if you sell direct to consumers.
How long do alcohol wipes stay wet in the sachet?
With our foil-laminate four-side seal, 24–36 months. Dry-out is almost always a packaging failure rather than a formulation one: paper-backed or single-layer film sachets let alcohol vapour migrate out within months. If you have had dry-pad complaints from a previous supplier, that is the cause.
Can you private label alcohol wipes for retail as well as clinical use?
Yes. Retail programmes typically use a 10-pad flow-wrap strip or a 40–80 count canister with consumer-facing artwork and claims; clinical programmes use bulk sachet cartons with lot, expiry and barcode fields. We run both from the same formulation.
