How it works

The antiseptic that stays on the skin

Chlorhexidine gluconate is a cationic bisbiguanide. Its positive charge pulls it onto the negatively charged bacterial cell wall, where at low concentration it disrupts membrane permeability and at higher concentration precipitates the cytoplasm outright. That charge is also what makes CHG different from every other antiseptic we make: it binds to the stratum corneum and to skin proteins, so a measurable antimicrobial effect persists for hours after application rather than ending the moment the skin dries.

That persistence is the entire clinical argument. Alcohol gives you a faster initial kill; CHG gives you a kill that is still working when the incision is made or when the catheter dressing goes on. It is why pre-operative CHG bathing has become standard practice in surgical-site-infection bundles, and why 2% CHG cloths are stocked by the pack rather than the pad — a full-body protocol uses six to eight cloths in a defined sequence.

We produce 2% CHG for pre-surgical and pre-operative bathing, 4% CHG for skin cleansing and wound-adjacent use, and 2% CHG combined with 70% isopropyl alcohol where a protocol calls for both immediate and residual action. What is the difference between 2% and 4% chlorhexidine wipes?

2% CHG is the concentration used for pre-operative and daily patient bathing — high enough for meaningful skin bioburden reduction, gentle enough for repeated full-body use. 4% CHG is a stronger cleansing concentration used on more localised areas and around wound margins. Going to 4% for whole-body bathing increases irritation without a proportionate clinical benefit, which is why bathing protocols specify 2%.

Why use chlorhexidine instead of alcohol?

Alcohol kills faster but stops working the instant it evaporates. Chlorhexidine binds to the outer skin layer and keeps a measurable antimicrobial effect for hours. For a quick injection site, alcohol is the right and cheaper choice. For a surgical incision or a catheter dressing that stays in place for days, the residual action is the whole point. Some protocols use a 2% CHG + 70% alcohol combination to get both.

Can chlorhexidine wipes be used before surgery?

Yes — pre-operative CHG bathing is a standard component of surgical-site-infection prevention bundles, typically six to eight 2% CHG cloths applied in a defined body-region sequence the evening before and the morning of surgery. We print that sequence on the pack because it measurably improves whether patients complete it correctly.

Are chlorhexidine wipes safe around the eyes and ears?

No, and this is the one hard contraindication for the chemistry. CHG can cause corneal damage on eye contact and is ototoxic — it must not enter the ear canal or come into contact with the meninges or other neural tissue. Every pack we produce carries that warning text as standard rather than as an option.

Do you make chlorhexidine wipes for dogs and veterinary use?

We do, but on a separate product line with its own formulation and labelling — see our medicated pet wipes, which include chlorhexidine and chlorhexidine + ketoconazole options for hot spots and dermatological conditions. Human clinical and veterinary CHG are not interchangeable products and should not share artwork.

Do chlorhexidine wipes need to be rinsed off?

No. Our CHG cloths are formulated rinse-free — that is the operational advantage over traditional basin bathing, which also removes the basin itself as a potential pathogen reservoir. The skin is left to air-dry; no towel-drying, which would remove the residual CHG layer you just applied.
