How it works

Matching an unsaturated substrate to your own chemistry

Plenty of operations saturate in-house rather than buying pre-moistened wipes, and the reasons are good ones: a validated cleaner or disinfectant they do not want to re-qualify, a solution too unstable to sit in a sealed pack for two years, a cost structure where shipping water is the largest line item, or a dispensing system already installed across dozens of sites. What those operations need is not a product, it is a substrate that behaves predictably with their fluid — and that is a narrower requirement than it sounds.

Three interactions decide it. Pick-up weight: how much solution the sheet holds at equilibrium, which sets both dose and how many wipes a bucket yields — get it wrong and the roll either floods or runs dry two-thirds down. Chemical compatibility: this is the one that surprises people, because quaternary ammonium disinfectants bind to cellulose and to some fibre finishes, so a quat solution poured onto the wrong substrate loses a meaningful fraction of its active before it ever reaches a surface — the wipe is quietly under-dosing while every label still says otherwise. Wicking rate: in a centre-feed bucket, solution has to travel the full roll evenly, or the outer wraps are wet and the core is dry.

So the specification we work to is your fluid, your dispenser and your target dose, in that order. Polyester-rich blends for quat compatibility and solvent resistance; viscose-rich where absorbency and softness matter more; weight set from the pick-up you need; and roll construction and core size matched to the equipment you already own. We will also say plainly when a pre-saturated product would serve better — an operation saturating fifty buckets a week is usually paying more in labour than the freight it saved.

Dry wipes are bought by the case far more often than by the pack, so the master carton, the count accuracy and the dispensing method usually matter more than the artwork. We supply interfolded, roll and centre-feed formats alongside retail packs, and we will match an existing dispenser if you send us one.

Unsaturated supply is a qualification process: samples against your fluid, a pick-up and wicking check in your own dispenser, then a specification both sides sign. It takes longer than buying a finished wipe and it produces a far more durable relationship, because once a substrate is qualified into a validated process, changing it is a project rather than a decision.

Why buy dry wipes and add the solution ourselves?

Usually one of four reasons: you have a cleaner or disinfectant already validated that you do not want to re-qualify, your solution is too unstable to sit in a sealed pack for two years, shipping water across the country is your largest cost line, or you have dispenser equipment already installed across many sites. If none of those apply, a pre-saturated product is usually the better answer and we will say so.

Does the substrate really affect a disinfectant solution?

Yes, and this is the most under-appreciated failure in the category. Quaternary ammonium compounds are cationic and bind to cellulose fibres and to some fibre finishes, so a quat solution poured onto a cellulose-rich substrate loses a meaningful fraction of its active concentration to the fabric before it ever reaches a surface. The wipe under-doses while every label continues to say otherwise. Polyester-rich substrates avoid it, which is why quat systems should always be specified on one.

What is pick-up weight and why does it matter?

It is how much solution the substrate holds at equilibrium, expressed as a multiple of the dry sheet weight, and it decides two things at once: the dose delivered per wipe and how many wipes a bucket of solution actually yields. Set it too low and the roll runs dry two-thirds down; too high and the outer wraps flood while the count per bucket collapses. It is the first number we establish in a qualification.

Will your rolls fit our existing dispensers?

That is part of the specification. Core diameter, roll outside diameter, sheet perforation spacing and centre-feed pull characteristics are all set to your equipment — send us a roll from your current supplier and we will match it dimensionally. Changing a substrate should never require changing hundreds of installed dispensers.

Can you supply the solution as well?

We can formulate and supply a matched solution where you want one, but many customers on this programme specifically do not — the whole reason they buy unsaturated is that their chemistry is already validated. Where we do supply both, the advantage is that pick-up weight and compatibility are established together rather than discovered afterwards.

How long does qualification take?

Typically four to eight weeks: substrate samples against your fluid, a pick-up and wicking check in your own dispenser, a use trial on site, then a written specification. It is slower than ordering a finished wipe, and it produces a supply agreement rather than a transaction — which is generally what both sides want at this volume.
